PICKING UP THE PIECES
PICKING UP THE PIECES – THE MAKING OF THE WITNESS BLANKET 1×90’ / 1×60′
PICKING UP THE PIECES follows artist Carey Newman on his journey to create the ‘Witness Blanket’ – an intricate artwork and national monument that commemorates the experiences of residential school survivors across Canada. Inspired to know more about his father’s time at residential school, Carey travels across the country sourcing hundreds of items from residential schools, churches and government buildings. Each object has a story to tell, each survivor has something to say. Narrated by the artist, the film weaves together those stories with Carey’s personal journey, examining how profoundly art can open our hearts to the pain of truth and the beauty of resiliency.
Both the film and the physical Witness Blanket are featured in permanent exhibition at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
